IEEE Credentialing Program: Empowering Your Workforce 8256 5504 IEEE Credentialing Program

Summary

The IEEE Credentialing Program provide a fast, industry-aligned way for learners to gain and verify specific technical skills through a competency-based model backed by IEEE’s global professional standards.

As the global technical landscape accelerates at a breakneck pace, industries such as AI, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing are evolving faster than traditional workforce pipelines can keep up. This widening talent gap has forced a fundamental shift in how we define professional readiness. The traditional, degree-only hiring model is giving way to a more agile, skills-based approach, where the ability to apply skills to perform specific tasks is becoming the primary currency of the labor market.

In high-growth sectors, companies can’t afford to wait years for talent to enter the workforce; they need job-ready employees today. To stay competitive, organizations are investing in continuous learning programs that upskill existing staff, accelerate onboarding, and create reliable talent pipelines for emerging technical roles.

The IEEE Credentialing Program helps bridge this gap by issuing validated digital credentials for professional development and skills assessment on behalf of professional education and training providers.

IEEE Credentialing Program Overview

The IEEE Credentialing Program offers two different types of credential verification: professional certificates and skills-based microcredentials.

  • Certificates prove successful completion of a learning course, and some offer PDH/CEU credits required for professional engineering licensure.
  • Microcredentials convey the demonstration of specific skills and are earned through an assessment-based model.

Both IEEE professional certificates and skills-based microcredentials offer digital badges for learners upon successful completion of the program. Digital badges are verifiable and sharable, highlighting learning accomplishments with potential employers.

Professional Certificates

Organizations can add value to events, conferences or courses by offering IEEE certificates with Professional Development Hours (PDHs) or Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for professional licenses. Certificates are typically awarded for successful completion of a training or education course.

Certificates that bear PDHs require an evaluation form, while certificates with CEUs require an evaluation form and the learner to pass an exam or other assessment.

IEEE Certificates Benefits

  • Turn-Key Process: Our online process makes it easy to offer CEUs and PDHs for courses and events.
  • Global Recognition: Credentials validated by a globally-trusted name with members located in 190+ countries.
  • Easily Sharable: Certificates are verifiable, downloadable and sharable. Learners are provided with a digital wallet to access their certificates issued by IEEE.

Skills-Based Microcredentials

To earn IEEE microcredentials, learners demonstrate their performance of specific skills through assessment. They use a competency-based model, ensuring learners have demonstrated their ability to perform  these skills before a credential is awarded. Because microcredentials have fewer rules governing their definition, industry recognition, the reputation of the issuer, and third-party validation are key elements to help assure quality.

IEEE Microcredentials Benefits

  • Designed for Industry: Our microcredentials ensure technicians possess validated, real-world skills, creating a reliable pipeline of qualified candidates.
  • Verifiable: Includes digital badges that make skills-validation visible.
  • Agile: Tailored for learners and can be earned via simulation, online, work-based learning, or in-person training.
  • Fast: Developed and deployed rapidly compared to traditional academic programs, without sacrificing quality assurance
  • Stackable: Allows learners to build expertise and demonstrate continued growth
  • Accessible: Reduces the financial and time barriers between learning and work.

Getting Started

For over 30 years, IEEE—the world’s largest technical professional organization—has set the gold standard for validated training and verified credentials. Today, the IEEE Credentialing Program partners with corporations, training providers, and academic institutions to validate emerging technical skills and strengthen workforce development strategies.

IEEE credentials provide a fast, verifiable, and scalable way to develop job‑ready talent. By empowering learners with job-ready expertise and providing industry with a reliable talent pipeline, we are enabling the world to meet the rapid pace of technological change.
